Welcome to the website of the International Criminal Law Network!

The advancement of international criminal law, professional and social interaction on a worldwide level between academics, policymakers and legal professionals is essential. For this reason the International Criminal Law Network (ICLN) was founded in 2002 by Science Alliance with the support of the Dutch Ministries of Defence and Foreign Affairs and the Municipality of The Hague. ICLN has the mission to organise professional and social interaction on a worldwide level between academics, policymakers and legal professionals in the area of international criminal law. In order to realise this goal, ICLN organises successful activities on a wide scale, such as an Annual Conference, several lectures per year, the ICC Trial Competition and regional training workshops. Thousands of people from all over the world have visited the events of ICLN. Please take a look at our website to learn more about our activities and future events.

Lieneke Louman, Manager ICLN

“The forum that this network provides, linking the academic world to policy makers and legal professionals is crucial to ensure that international criminal justice grows with the best ideas in academia enriching its discourse, whilst being firmly grounded in the realities of state politics and the interests of legal practice"

Mrs. Silvana Arbia, Registrar of the ICC, at the ICLN Annual Reception on June 29, 2010

ICLN Annual Reception 2010 PDF Print E-mail

ICLN Annual Reception 2010

Short Summary

On Tuesday June 29, 2010 ICLN held her Annual Reception hosted by the law firm Buren van Velzen Guelen in The Hague.

With the first ICC Review Conference having been held only two weeks before, the Annual Reception 2010 was a timely event for students, academics and practitioners alike. The audience was certainly reflective of this: there were app. 80 attendees, made up of interested people at all levels of seniority, from interns at various Hague tribunals to representatives from NGO's and Embassies. The three speakers represented some of the highest in their speciality: Mrs. Silvana Arbia, the Registrar of the ICC, Prof. William Schabas, a renowned academic expert and the Director of the Irish Human Rights Centre and Mr. de Savornin-Lohman, the Dutch Ambassador to the ICC. Each of them could not only provide their professional analysism, but also add a personal touch, as they had all been personally present at the Review Conference itself.

Members of the audience also shared their experiences like a representative of Human Rights Watch, lending the NGO viewpoint, and the Ambassador from Uganda, sharing the Ugandan perspective as both a participant and the host of the Review Conference.

In this way, an event that began as a series of lectures was naturally transformed into a wide discussion, one which continued over the wine and snacks that followed the formal conclusion. ICLN is extremely pleased with the success of the Annual Reception, and already looks forward to the Autumn Lecture in September.
