ICLN Annual Reception 2010 Short Summary On Tuesday June 29, 2010 ICLN held her Annual Reception hosted by the law firm Buren van Velzen Guelen in The Hague. With the first ICC Review Conference having been held only two weeks before, the Annual Reception 2010 was a timely event for students, academics and practitioners alike. The audience was certainly reflective of this: there were app. 80 attendees, made up of interested people at all levels of seniority, from interns at various Hague tribunals to representatives from NGO's and Embassies. The three speakers represented some of the highest in their speciality: Mrs. Silvana Arbia, the Registrar of the ICC, Prof. William Schabas, a renowned academic expert and the Director of the Irish Human Rights Centre and Mr. de Savornin-Lohman, the Dutch Ambassador to the ICC. Each of them could not only provide their professional analysism, but also add a personal touch, as they had all been personally present at the Review Conference itself. Members of the audience also shared their experiences like a representative of Human Rights Watch, lending the NGO viewpoint, and the Ambassador from Uganda, sharing the Ugandan perspective as both a participant and the host of the Review Conference. In this way, an event that began as a series of lectures was naturally transformed into a wide discussion, one which continued over the wine and snacks that followed the formal conclusion. ICLN is extremely pleased with the success of the Annual Reception, and already looks forward to the Autumn Lecture in September. |

ICLN Spring Lecture 2010 Short summary On April 7th ICLN held its annual Spring Lecture at the law firm Buren van Velzen Guelen. The presentation was held by the Vice - President of Eurojust, Mrs. Coninsx. Several key issues were addressed, such as the structure of judicial co-operation within Europe from 1999 till 2009. Mrs. Coninsx provided an indepth overview of the recent development and progression of Eurojust with regards to harmonization, approximation and mutual recognition. The conclusion focused on the necessity of building confidence. Such confidence will be of great assistance concerning the cooperation and coordination that are slowly being implemented within the European Criminal Law system. Progressive changes will ultimately benefit the Lisbon Treaty. After lecture there was time for drinks and talks at the informal reception. ICLN thanks Buren van Velzen Guelen for hosting the ICLN Spring Lecture 2010 Information about the Annual Reception in June will be online soon. |
